AP and Pre-AP classes offered at WHS
An AP course is a collegiate-level course and therefore carries a potential GPA weight value of 1. A weighted course means that if a student earns a B (3 points) in the course, the student’s GPA may reflect 4 points when grades are calculated. The AP program teaches students to challenge themselves, to study subjects in greater detail, and to develop reasoning and analytical skills. In addition, AP courses and exams prepare students for the rigorous demands of college. National studies of college entrance requirements indicate that course selection is the most important criteria for admitting students. The main requirement for enrollment in AP courses is a strong curiosity of the subject matter and the dedication to work hard. The cost of the AP exam is paid for by the Waynesville R-VI School District. A student who scores a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP exam may earn placement or credit at the university level; however, each university varies, so students will need to check with their universities. Additionally, a student can earn a $100 award from the Waynesville R-VI School District by achieving a qualifying score of a 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Exam.
