Auto Service Technology

About the Program

Automotive Service Technology
(Open to Grades 11, 12 & Adults)

Do you enjoy an intellectually challenging environment that keeps you on your toes?  Do you have a passion for cars?

Working on today's cars requires an understanding in the science and technology that goes into the modern, highly-sophisticated automobile. At WCC, students spend time in the classroom and then apply what they've learned to actual shop projects.

The Waynesville Career Center Auto Service Technology Program prepares students for entry-level skill positions in the Automotive Service Industry.  Students will learn from classroom instruction, computer training, guided practice, and live work on real vehicles.

Our facilities include modern tools and diagnostic equipment in step with the industry's most successful shops. Using these, students will explore everything under the hood of today's automobiles and learn how to diagnose and repair problems

Curriculum will be based on industry, NATEF, and ASE recommendations and guidelines.

Our students will have the opportunity to earn ASE Entry-Level Technician Certifications as well as TOYOTA Maintenance-Level Technician certifications. These certifications will benefit students when they search for jobs in our industry.

Students will learn about:

  • Automatic Transmission and Transaxle

  • Brakes

  • Electrical Systems

  • Engine Performance

  • Engine Repair

  • Heating and Air-Conditioning

  • Manual Drive-Train and Axle

  • Suspension and Steering

Students spend approximately 25% of their course time in the classroom.  Laboratory and shop experiences are both assigned by the instructor.  Students troubleshoot and repair training vehicles as well as do live shop work.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives, working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. It helps each student excel.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.

The SkillsUSA Championships is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels.

This is a multi-million dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields. In 2011, there were more than 5,700 contestants in 94 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management make the national event possible.

The philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers' needs.

Grading Policy

Students will be evaluated on written tests, computer-based training scores, lab assignments, notebook/workbook completion, daily participation in the class, and career readiness skills.  Daily participation is necessary for successful completion of the course.  A part of the program’s goals are to prepare the students for an entry-level career in the Automotive Industry.  Just like a real job, attendance is an extremely important part of the student’s grade.  The student’s final grade is calculated on a total point basis.  All seniors (regardless of whether they are Year 1 or 2) are required to take a series of ASE/NATEF End-of-course tests. The score from these tests will be 10% of their last semester grade. Students passing these tests will receive an ASE Student Certification certificate. In addition, a written final will be given at the end of every semester.

  • A = 90-100%

  • B = 80-89%

  • C = 70-79%

  • D = 60-69%

  • F = 0-59%

 Grading will utilize a 50, 40, 10 scale:

  • 50% Performance and Written Assignments

  • 40% Projects / Activates / Assignments

  • 10% Career Readiness Skills
