CAMPBELL EARNS DOCTORATE
Dr. Sonya B. Campbell, Principal at Wood Elementary School earned a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Saint Louis University on May 15, 2010. Her dissertation entitled "A Comparative Study of Educational Leadership Behavior by Gender and Race" used a multifaceted leadership-behavioral scale to exam how race and gender impacts leadership styles and outcomes. When asked to describe the most interesting finding from her study Dr. Campbell replied, “I was able to prove that there ARE very real and tangible differences in the leadership styles of men and women and that race impacts leadership behaviors.” Campbell adds, “A statistically significant number of respondents indicated that they prefer the leadership styles of female leaders in education over males. And, my findings indicate that African American women represent transformational leaders more often than women of other races/ethnicities.” Educational literature describes transformational leaders as influential, inspiring and motivating.
Dr. Campbell clearly loves what she does. When asked what she plans to do with her new credentials she replied, "I plan to do what I've been doing for more than twenty years, educating and mentoring young students and education professionals. This degree only further ignited my passion to make a real difference in the American educational system." Dr. Campbell, a proud Alumna of Waynesville High School said, "I think it's important for me to show young people that opportunities are limitless when equipped with an education. I'm a product of this district, I believe in this district and I believe the leaders of tomorrow will come from this district." Dr. Campbell's longstanding commitment to education is evidenced by the receipt of numerous awards, accolades and degrees. In addition to a doctorate, Campbell holds the following: Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Central Missouri, Master of Education in Learning Disabilities from Drury University, Master of Science in Education from Missouri State University and Specialist in Educational Administration from Missouri State University. Dr. Campbell is married to (Ret. 1st. Sgt. United States Army) Timothy Maybin, Training Developer for Advancia at Fort Leonard Wood.
