Welcome to Thayer!  My name is Sara Garner and I am the Guidance Counselor here at Thayer.  As the Counselor I have a variety of very important jobs within the school.  The most important job I do is provide guidance to classrooms, groups and individuals.  

I visit each classroom every other week to present a guidance topic.  Here at Thayer we focus on important Character traits. 

As the year progresses I will begin to form groups for those students who are identified as needing support with friendship, family, or study skill difficulties.  Students can identify themselves as needing the group or they can be referred by teachers, staff, or parents.

I also spend time meeting with students individually to work out various issues. Again, students can identify themselves as needing help or students can be referred by teachers, staff or parents.

The 2011-2012 school year will begin my 10th year as a Professional School Counselor and my 3rd year at Thayer Elementary.  Being a school counselor is a great joy for me.  I love working with children of all ages in a school setting.  

Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my wonderful family.  My husband is currently stationed here at Fort Leonard Wood as an instructor for the Navy.  My step-son will be a 6th grader at Thayer this year and my two daughters are 4 years old and 9 months old.  Together we take time to go fishing, boating, water skiing, shopping, and traveling.

My hobbies include scrapbooking, crafts, running, and reading.  I also enjoy attending professional development seminars on Play Therapy and I am working towards becoming a Registered Play Therapist.
