POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORTS (PBS), STUDENT BEHAVIOR AND DISCIPLINE
Thayer Mustangs are:
Respectful Learners,
Responsible Learners, and
Safe Learners
Orderly operation in the school and classroom are essential factors in creating an appropriate climate for learning. Students will be held accountable for their behavior and it is the responsibility of the elementary staff, together with parents, to encourage the formation of appropriate behavior patterns and to clearly express expectations for behavior.
“Students learn appropriate behavior in the same way they learn to read - through instruction, practice, feedback, and encouragement.â€
Thayer Elementary has joined the multitude of other schools across the state of Missouri in implementing Positive Behavior Support (PBS). PBS offers a broad range of systematic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior. The faculty and staff at Thayer will be teaching, modeling, practicing, and reinforcing the expected behaviors with our students throughout the school year. A copy of the Thayer Behavior Matrix is enclosed in this handbook for your information. The matrix is broken into different “Areas†such as playground, cafeteria, etc… In each area the behavior expectations are listed.Maintaining orderly classroom discipline is the responsibility of the classroom teacher and must be present to promote student achievement. Good classroom discipline reflects positive communication between the teacher, the student, and the parents. We appreciate your help and support when dealing with behavior issues.A student may be sent to the principal when the teacher has documented a pattern of student behavior that impedes the orderly operation of the classroom or as the result of a severe rule violation. The principal will keep a record of all disciplinary actions taken as a result of a child being sent to the office. Discipline reports to parents may be sent home with the student or mailed.
The Waynesville R-VI School District subscribes to a policy service program through the Missouri School Boards Association. Since our student discipline policies are exactly the same as the text on the district's web site, a hard copy of the student discipline code will only be made available upon request. Parents and/or guardians not having access to the district's web site via a computer link should contact their principal's office during regular business hours to receive a hard copy of the student discipline policy.
