Band Program

The Waynesville Middle School Band Program is a progressive program featuring offerings of both concert bands and jazz ensembles in the school day.  The concert bands are open to all students who want to participate and perform at various concerts.  For contest, the students are auditioned to fill the Contest Band or 7th and 8th Grade Wind Ensemble.  This is a common practice for large school districts to stratify groups into various ability levels.  Band students begin in 6th grade and they are bussed to the middle school every morning for band practice.  Mastery learning is a fundamental component of any competent, progressive program.  The Waynesville Middle band philosophy carries the high expectations that if a student works hard enough, they can be successful on an instrument that fits their physical and mental attributes.  Prior to beginning on an instrument, students are tested on the major categories of instruments to make sure they pick the instrument that fits them.
