Course Syllabus--American History
2007-2008

Teacher:  Mr. Johnson
Grade and Subject:  7th Grade History

Course Duration:  2 Semesters

Course Description:  This course is designed to study American
                History from early european exploration to the U.S. Constitution.

Required Book:  The American Republic to 1877

Student Supplies:  Pencils, blue or black pens, and paper are required.  A history folder or history divider within a binder is preferred. Colored pencils and/or markers are optional.

Rationale:  Learning early American History will help students understand the cause and effect relationship between past and present events. By engaging in this study students will be able to develop an appreciation of American Heritage and how it directly relates to their lives.

Course Goals and Objectives: 
        Students will be able to:
     1.  Recognize rights and responsibilities under the U.S. Constitution and debate their use in daily living.
     2.  Explain and illustrate cultural diversity in the America’s.
     3.  Differentiate the types of conflict resolution needed to build the United States.
     4.  Identify reasons for exploration and settlement in the new world.
     5.  Solve problems through the use of basic social skills.
     6.  Examine the sacrifices of our American ancestors and the hardships of        their daily lives.

     7.  Demonstrate the ability to use historical research skills.
     8.  Create a historical presentation using research skills.
     9.  Identify reasons governments change.
    10. Interpret basic economic concepts.

Grading Scale:
    A    95-100    C+    77-79    D-    60-62
    A-    90-94      C    73-76     F    59 and below
    B+    87-89    C-    70-72
    B    83-86       D+    67-69
    B-    80-82      D    63-66   

Late Work: Assignments are due when the teacher calls for them, refer to 2007-2008 Student Handbook.

Academic Assistance:  Students may take advantage of extra assistance which will be available Mon., Tue, Thur. and Fri. before school as early as 6:30 a.m. Afternoons can be arranged with the teacher prior to winter and spring sports seasons. 1 point extra credit will be given for each morning attended no later than 7:00 a.m. throughout the year. There will be no other assignments given for extra credit!  During this time students can receive help on their assignments and/or review skills already learned in preparation for test or quizzes. 

Classroom Behavior:  (Specific Rules)
    1.  Be in class and in your seat when the bell rings.
    2.  Come to class prepared: pencil, paper, textbook, and planner.  
    3.  Begin daily classroom routine as soon as you are seated.
    4.  Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak.
    5.  Stay in your seat unless given permission otherwise.
    6.  Follow directions the first time given.
    7.  No Distracting items- i.e. toys, lights, cards , trinkets, etc.
       
Consequences of inappropriate Behavior:
    1.  Verbal Warning
    2.  Seat Change
    3.  Conference with student
    4.  Referred to counselor and parents/guardians contacted.
    5.  Referral to principal.
**Certain actions may result in skipping any of the above steps.
