Welcome to 8th Grade Math!

8th Grade Math Teachers
Brian Beckler, Marilyn Kathcart, Cecilia Swain, Nancy Swick
8th grade mathematics offers two course for students: Pre Algebra and Algebra I.
Pre-Algebra is the preparation class for Algebra I.
Algebra I is a high school class. Therefore, students who have completed the course successfully will receive one high school credit. Students earning a C or D will be advised to repeat the course. Students earning an F will be required to repeat the course.
The main focus in both classes is for each student to understand the concepts of algebra and to be able to apply their understanding to solve problems. Students will be expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of concepts and their applications in problem solving and real world situations.
Students will be given opportunities to practice the skills required as they strive to learn the content through classroom activities, take home practice, and quizzes. Not only will students work independently, but they may also work in pairs, small groups, or as a class to improve comprehension.
Students will be monitored continuously throughout the year to check progress and to help make decisions concerning placement, intervention, and acceleration.
Algebra I students have access to an online textbook. They may log on at my.hrw.com. Teachers will provide the username and password for this site.
Pre-Algebra students have access to an online textbook at glencoe.com. Enter as a parent/student and select the textbook Math Connects: Concepts, Skill, and Problem Solving. Teachers will provide an access code for students.
Be sure to reference the classroom syllabus for specific expectations for students, educators and parents/guardians.
We are looking forward to a year of student success!
