Power of I
Goal:
The goal of the Power of I is to meet our vision of “assuring educational success for all.” The Power of I does this by requiring all students to meet course-level standards at an acceptable level. Grades represent the degree to which students have met the standards in a course, it does not measure the percentage of standards met. Teachers that implement this policy will use the following guidelines:
1. Benchmarks
• A 70% benchmark will be used in all Power of I classes to represent basic mastery of standards; grades will therefore correlate to the following:
o A – advanced mastery of course standards
o B – proficient mastery of course standards
o C – basic mastery of course standards
2. Assignments
• When a student completes work that is below a “C” level, they are required to redo/revise their work to get it to at least the “C” level.
• If students fail to complete the assignment by the designated deadline, they shall receive an “F” for the semester.
3. Late Work
• Work handed in late or re-done to meet the required standard shall be handled similarly to what is proposed in the grading guidelines with one primary exception: the lowest grade entered in the gradebook shall be the 70% benchmark the student was required to attain.
4. Codes
• Individual assignments shall be coded as follows:
o Missing assignments (not handed in) shall be coded with an “M” in the gradebook.
o Incomplete assignments (not completed to the 70% benchmark) shall be coded with an “I” in the gradebook.
o Formative assignments that are assigned & assessed but don’t count towards the final grade shall be coded with a check mark in the gradebook.
• If a student has any missing or incomplete assignments in a Power of I classroom, their overall course grade will be overridden with an “F.” The percentage shall be left as is.
o The “F” represents only that one or more assignments are missing or incomplete
o The percentage is based only on completed work & does not reflect those missing or incomplete assignments
5. Semester Deadline
• The cutoff to accept assignments is the week before finals each semester. At this time, any missing or incomplete assignments will result in the student’s overall grade translating into an F and result in loss of credit
• Semester finals are exempted from the Power of I due to the fact that they represent the last summative evaluation of the semester and there is inadequate time for corrections before grades must be reported
6. Testing
• Teachers will give students opportunities to raise their mastery of course-level standards to the basic level on test scores below the 70% benchmark to the basic level of mastery. Students must use academic intervention time to either retake a test or make test corrections based on the teachers requirement for a course.
