Advanced Placement Courses

Quality Point Courses

Earning Valedictorian/Salutatorian Status

Advanced Placement Courses

Advanced Placement courses give high school students the opportunity to get a head start on college-level work.

Students that are enrolled in AP courses may choose to take the AP Exam at the end of the year to potentially receive college credit for that course. College credit is earned based on student scores on the AP Exam. Students are encouraged to contact their future college or university to determine the AP credit policy for their school. Each AP course offered is approved by the College Board. These courses are subject to teacher availability.

Waynesville High School currently offers AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Psychology, AP US Government and Politics and AP United States History.

Quality Point Classes

A quality point grading system is used for class rank. A student can earn 4 of the 13 quality point credits to be used toward their overall GPA class ranking in relationship to Valedictorian and Salutatorian honors. Beginning with the class of 2013 this number will be increased to five quality points. A 1/2 unit quality class receives 1/2 quality-point and a 1 credit quality class receives 1 quality-point. Quality-points are added to the total points of the regular classes in computation of a grade point average for class rank. Students should remember that any class enrolled in would be counted as a part of their over-all GPA. The Advanced Placement classes and dual credit classes listed above with the exception of Computer Information Technology are quality point classes.

Standards for Earning

Valedictorian / Salutatorian Status

Beginning with the class of 2013, the valedictorian and the salutatorian designation will be awarded to the students with the highest and second highest GPA after eight (8) semesters that also meet the following minimum requirements.

  1. The student must earn a MINIMUM of five (5) credits in quality point courses.
  2. A MAXIMUM of five (5) quality point credits will be counted toward a student's GPA.
  3. The student must meet the course requirements for the Missouri College Preparatory Certificate.

GPA will be calculated through three (3) decimal places. A committee of administrators and counselors will review and name the valedictorian(s) and salutatorian from the eligible candidates. Ties will be designated as co-valedictorian(s). When co-valedictorians are named, no salutatorian will be named for that year.
