I am Kathy Richard, your child's first grade teacher. This is my 16th year in the classroom. I have not always taught first grade, but it is my favorite grade.
Here are a few things about our classroom.
We work hard in first grade so we don't have much free time for fun and games. We alleviate that by working with fun manipulatives and learning games.
WRITING
We have journals for writing. We write in them at least once a week. At the beginning of the year I model the writing for them, so they understand how to do it. we always begin with Dear J, and the date. Soon students are writing pages by themselves and proud to read it aloud.
READING
We have a great reading series here in Waynesville.
Every week we begin with a big book. On Monday I read it to the class. Tuesday through Thursday they read and practice the book with me. On Friday they read it to me. It's a fun way for them to show off their skills.
MATH
We add to our math curriculum by having Morning Math every day. At this time we learn about calendars, clocks, even and odd numbers, and we practice counting by 1's, 5's, and 10's, forward and backward.
