About Our District

The Waynesville R-VI School District serves the communities of Waynesville,
St. Robert, and Ft. Leonard Wood in Pulaski County in south central Missouri. A population of nearly 5600 students in grades K-12 is housed in an early childhood center, six elementary buildings, one 7-8 middle school, one 9-12 high school, one career education center, one alternative school, and one private treatment facility.  For more information on any of our schools, click on the Schools tab at the top of the page and go to that school's webpage.

Our Communities

The population of the Waynesville R-VI School District is just over 30,000, encompassing three cities and the rural areas surrounding them in Pulaski County, Missouri. Waynesville, with a population of 3500 is the county seat. Adjoining Waynesville to the east is St. Robert with a population of just under 3000. St. Robert has recently experienced a high level of commercial growth.

To the southwest of the two cities lies Ft. Leonard Wood with a permanent party population of nearly 14,000. Ft. Leonard Wood is a training base with missions including basic training, the U.S. Army's Engineer School, Military Police School, and Chemical School, among others. Over 60,000 service members from Ft. Wood graduate from training each year.

Ft. Leonard Wood is the most significant economic force impacting the community and school. Approximately 61% of the district's students are military dependents, and another 12% of the district's students have at least one parent working on the military base. The base continues to see growth in the number of personnel and amount of construction. There are currently over $250 million worth of construction in progress or planned during this fiscal year.

The technology business park located on the Army post is the first in the nation with a unique partnership of Education, Military, State Government and Business. Many businesses, from start-ups to the nation's leading Fortune 500 corporations, are represented at Fort Leonard Wood as Federal Government contractors to the Military.

Our Mission

The mission of the Waynesville R-VI School District is "Through commitment to quality teaching and learning, we prepare students for success."  Producing students for success in today's complex and fast-paced world is the single most important responsibility of the district. Schools, teachers, administrators, and support staff work together to ensure that all students enrolled in district schools receive the highest quality of educational opportunities that will not only enable them to meet or exceed state standards, but also will position them for success in future educational and career endeavors.  Feel free to use the links on the right to read more about our vision, mission, and our strategic plan for improvement.

Our Staff

The district currently employs approximately 800 people: 446 certified teachers; 32 administrators/coordinators; and 335 non-certified staff.  This includes teachers who average over 12 years of teaching experience. Nearly 54 percent of district teachers hold master's degrees or higher.

Our Performance

Waynesville R-VI student test scores consistently exceed state averages on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP).  MAP tests are administered in Communication Arts and Math to students in grades 3-11 and in Science in grades 5, 8, and 11.  In addition, our district measures student progress using a variety of other assessments.  For example, all students in grades K-10 are given a reading test three times each year.  For more information about student performance click on the School Improvement tab on the right, or click on the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's school data webpage at dese.mo.gov/schooldata/school_data.html

Volunteer Program

Waynesville R-VI works to build a connected learning community to enhance our students' success. The district works closely with parents and other community members, PTOs, senior citizens, area businesses, service organizations, local governments, and military groups.
Two years ago the district took a huge step toward engaging the community in schools by opening a new district-level position of Community Volunteer Coordinator. Under that office, there are currently over 1200 individuals who have registered to volunteer in school buildings.

The coordinator has written and received two federal grants that place volunteers in buildings on a regular basis. The AmeriCorp program provides 11 fulltime volunteers placed in every elementary building and the middle school to directly tutor students in reading and math before and after school. The VISTA program provides 11 fulltime volunteers to work with the community at large to build the capacity of the school district to serve at-risk youth and eliminate poverty.
